Rev. Debra Avery
Debra’s sense of call emerged out of a sense that the church must live into its core value of being “reformed and always reforming.” To that work, she has brought vision and strategy skillsets and a strong sense of call to work for justice both within and outside the church.
She served as a second career pastor in four Presbyterian congregations: Good Shepherd (Yonkers, NY 2001-2004), Hope (Springfield, IL 2004-2008), Palo Cristi (Phoenix, AZ 2008-2012), and First (Oakland, CA 2012-2017) and is currently temporary supply pastor at Mission Bay Community Church and Parish Associate at Faith Presbyterian in Oakland.
For the last two years, she has been part of the PCUSA’s 1001 New Worshipping Communities initiative, forming a missional community called Justice House.
In addition to her service as a Pastor, she has led vision and strategy work in the presbyteries of Great Rivers and Grand Canyon. She has served on both the Presbyterian Mission Agency Review Committee (2014-2016) and the All Agency Review Committee (2016- 2018); as Moderator of the Presbytery of San Francisco (2017); and as a member of the Presbytery’s Mission and Vision Leadership Team (2015-2018).
